Last day in San Diego and trip home

I had a nice and low-key last day in San Diego. Tom and Jake came up to Pacific Beach and we took a long walk along the Pacific. I think we did about 6 miles total.

After grabbing a nice breakfast/brunch. We headed to downtown San Diego where Tom lives. Both Jake and Tom are lawyers so they had some work to do so I wandered around for myself.

I found a nice plaza where I could have a beer and listen to a DJ playing music. It was a nice interlude. The plaza was right on the waterfront not far from the Aircraft Carrier Midway museum.

Tom and Jake had invited me for dinner before my flight out and I wanted to find a bottle of wine to take to dinner. It became a process as all the wine stores near them seemed to be part of delis/or upscale markets without a lot of selection. I did find a Valpolicella in an Italian market which was suitable.

I stopped at what I thought was a wine bar for a glass of wine and to watch the World Cup match. It ended up being more of a restaurant than wine bar. It was cool and out of the sun so it was a good option. In the bar, I talked to Matt. He is originally from Philadelphia but has lived out in California for 20 some years. He was fun to talk to and discuss World Cup. The World Cup does seem to bring the world together.

It amused me as he told me he was a regular of longstanding at the bar and did not think it was the best. He said it had changed during/after COVID and had never really returned to being a wine bar but blended in with the restaurant next door which owns both places.

Dinner was great and featured my favorites – steak, shrimp and asparagus all grilled. We grilled and ate on the deck of Tom’s building.

After dinner, I Ubered to the airport and caught the redeye flight back to DC. Not my favorite but it is either an early flight or the redeye. There were no delays or problems so it was better than the flights out. Since Reagan is close to my house, it was easy to hop the metro and bus to get back to the apartment.

The one downside of the weekend was I got sunburned the last day. I did not realize we were going to walk as far in the sun as we did so had not taken my hat with me. I am using lots of aloe and lotion and every day it seems to be getting better.
