Day Three, San Diego

Liam and I went for a four mile run from the Airbnb cottage to the beach. We ran along the promenade south. The sun had not come out as the marine layer of clouds had not burned off. It is always great to run along the ocean.

After the run, Tom and Jake picked us up and we headed to La Jolla Shores where we were going on a kayak tour.

Before the tour we had brunch a Shorehouse Kitchen. Brunch was rushed as the restuarant was crowded and seemed under staffed. Luckily, Bobby, our waiter, came through for us and we were able to eat before the kayak tour. It was touch and go but we made it.

The kayaking was fun. We were in a group the tour covered the southern part of La Jolla Marine Sanctuary. The kayaks were open sea kayaks and it was fun to launch out through the waves. The guides were interesting and told us about the sanctuary and marine life that could be found in the cove. We paddled over to some caves and one of the highlights of the tour was going into one of the caves through a narrow passage with small waves. The tour guides said this was the first time in a month that they had been able to take people through the cave but I think that is just to make each tour feel special.

After the kayaking we hit a beach bar and rehydrated. It is always fun to hang out and beach bars and just enjoy the beach atmosphere and weather. The guacamole was great!

We headed back to the Airbnb for some rest time before dinner. Liam, Sarah and I took quick naps. We watched the Ecuador – Curacao World Cup match and it was very exciting. The poor Curacao goalie made 15 saves. Many of them back to back. We were so into the match that we watched the last part on Liam’s phone on the way to dinner and even stood on the sidewalk to watch the very end.

Dinner was in La Jolla proper. We walked down to the edge of the ocean and watched the sea lions on the rocks and frolicking in the ocean. One thing about sea lions is that they are stinky so it is not pleasant to be up close to them.

Dinner was on the deck of Duke’s, a Hawaiian theme restaurant named after a famous surfer. The food was great and the view was even better. Tom, Jake and I had the Furikake Ahi Tuna. Sarah had the ribs and chicken. Liam had macadamia nut crusted fish. We shared their famous pie for dessert.

Sunsets at the ocean are always fantastic. The deck views were incredible

We finished off the night at the Valencia Hotel’s Whaling Bar. It was a very fun and active day.

Great time with good friends.
