Not a perfect day in paradise

We woke up to rain and pretty strong winds. I am guessing there was a minor tropical disturbance in the Caribbean and it was affecting our area.

With a small break in the rain, we did a little jog up north on the island.

For breakfast, I had fresh pineapple. We had bought it at a nearby fruit stand and I cut it up for breakfast.

Because of the weather our plan for the day was changed. We were supposed to go snorkeling in the marine reserve but it was canceled for both morning and the afternoon.

Since snorkeling was canceled we came back to the hotel to hang out and hope for the best with the weather. Since the hotel room (really a suite as we have two bedrooms, kitchen and living/dining room) has a nice porch, I hung the hammock on the porch and read. It was a nice relaxing morning. Dima napped.

Since the World Cup semi-final between Argentina and England was at 1:00 pm our time, we walked down to Sandy Toe’s to have lunch and watch the match. We figured it would make it easy to walk back to the snorkeling dock to see if the afternoon tour was going.

I am really getting into the shrimp tacos. I like the ones here because they come in the hard corn tortillas and not the soft flour ones.

I have decided I am not good at choosing winners for the World Cup. I was routing for the Americans even though I thought they had no chance of winning. I, then, was rooting for Norway and they lost, I had backed France since I spend half my time in France. After that it was England. So far I am batting 0% on choosing winners.

In the afternoon, we took the golf cart and just went exploring the south part of San Pedro. We headed into more what I would call the native or regular parts of the city (non-tourist). It is very typical of a less developed country. There are nice homes and buildings right next to more rundown houes and buildings. Unfortunately, there is a lot of dumped material and trash by the sides of the roads.

I have found San Pedro interesting as there are not many, if any, large resorts. I always felt that Caribbean that they had been hotels and resorts lining the beach. This is definitely not the case in San Pedro. For good or bad, there is a lot of undeveloped land on the way to Secret Beach and there looks to be the start of more large scale developments out that way. Also, there is a large ex-pat community in San Pedro. There seem to be many American retirees here. We were at one of the beach bars and there was a group called San Pedro Walkaholics and they seem to meet regularly for activities (many around bars it seems as we saw them at another bar we went to).

Dima found a more local bar where you could play pool so we stopped there. He played two rounds of pool with a local guy.

For dinner we went to Elvi’s Kitchen. The food was very good. We had drinks instead of beers there. It was packed with both locals and tourists. The staff was great. I had snapper in an item called La Chita. It was a snapper tail in lemon, olives, capers and tomatoes. It was delicious. They served homemade banana bread as the bread option.

All in all it was a fun day even though the weather was not great.

I forgot to add this yesterday. On the way to Secret Beach and around Secret Beach there were lots of iguanas.
