My friend, Dima, and I decided to take a spontaneous trip to Bélize. We are going to spend six days on San Pedro.

Michelle, Dina’s girlfriend, nice drove us to the airport for an early morning flight. I like the concept of getting to the destination early but not sure I am good with having to get up at 4:00 am.

The two flights were uneventful. We used Delta which is a nice airline. We did fly through Atlanta which is can be a challenge in the summer with storms but there were not any issues. I have come to enjoy Delta’s snacks as I, generally, avoid junk food snacks but my downfall are Cheez Its. Delta has started serving them so I am happy. I only eat them at the beach or now on flights.

We arrived in Belize City and went through customs and immigration there. We had to fill out a paper customs and immigration form which I had not had to do in ages. We, also, had to fill in an online visa form. I think I got scammed as I did it through IVisa and it cost but I am guessing if I had one it through the Belize site, it would have been cheaper. Belize has a great entrance stamp which is nice.

We took a taxi to the water taxi terminal and Toni, our driver, was a good tour guide through the area to the terminal. He also got us to the water taxi just in time for the boat to depart. The ride to San Pedro is about 1.5 hours. Unfortunately, the water taxi is all inside seating so you cannot see a great deal but the color of the water is beautiful. There is an intermediate stop between Belize City and San Pedro at Caulker Caye.

Caye Casa, the hotel where we are staying, sent a driver to meet us at the water taxi terminal which was very nice.

Caye Casa is a small boutique style accommodation. It only has 8 rooms/suites. We have a very nice two bedroom with a porch overlooking the ocean and reef. It is very nice and definitely has everything one needs for a stay.

Jake, the owner, and Shane, the front desk staff, were great. They gave us lots of recommendations for food and other things. The offered us welcome beers, Beliken (the Belize brewing company beer). I think they will be very helpful for our stay.

After unpacking, we needed food so we walked down the beach to a beach bar and grill – Sandy Toes. We ordered fish tacos and lobster ceviche. It is lobster season in Bélize so all the restaurants have lobster on the menu.

The little bowl on the top of the ceviche is habanero peppers. Dima took a bite of one of them and was close to death. He said he stopped breathing for a minute after tasting it. I harassed him about eating the pepper straight. Also, the servers thought it was amusing. We were choking about a bet that if Spain won the World Cup match tomorrow, the server would eat a pepper and if France won, Dima would eat another pepper. Dima would not agree to that bet.

We wandered down the beach some and Dima swam at the local beach. The beach right in front of the hotel and down the shore is not very accessible because of sea grass. There are only a few places where you can swim. It is also very shallow as the reef is about a 1000 feet offshore. The reef also break the waves so you do not really get the beach sounds you get in Florida or North Carolina.

After showers and a little recovery, we walked over to the Purple Pelican for dinner. We had walked by it on an earlier exploration walk. It is a beautiful restaurant that sits on a lagoon on the west side of the island.

I had the Fish of the Day special which was very good. Dima had escargot and then lobster salad. I only have pictures of my dinner.

We walked back to Caye Casa and crashed as we both had gotten up at 4:00 am in the morning to make our flights.
