Last Day in Gdansk

Today is the first bad weather we have had since we arrived in Tallinn on the first day of the trip. It rained for the mid part of the day and was overcast until around sunset. We have not had any other rain except when we first arrived in Tallinn but that cleared by the time we went out to dinner.

We started the day with a short 3 mile run along the canal path which ends opposite the Gdansk shipyards. It was flat and a pretty easy run.

Since it was raining, we found breakfast and then wandered to a coffee shop where we hung out and read for a period of time. I had a fantastic hot chocolate which was perfect for a raining day. Not being good at trying to be a social media wiz, I forgot to take a picture of it to show how good it was.

We had booked tickets at the Solidarity Museum for the afternoon so we wandered over to the museum in the drizzle. Perfect afternoon to be in a building and learning history. The museum was very comprehensive of the founding of the Solidarity of movement (the audio guide was 2.5 hours) but was very interesting and informative. I knew much of the history from watching television coverage but there was much more involved and the history is fascinating. I would highly recommend the museum if you are ever in Gdansk. The three cross monument in front the museum commemorates the shipyard workers who were killed in 1970 during the first strike at the shipyard. The firing of a worker and the wish to commemorate the deaths is what lead to the second strike which really created Solidarity, which lead to freedom and the end of communist rule in Poland.

After the museum, we headed back to the Old City and wandered the walk by the canal and had a pastry and people watched. It was time to change for dinner as it was getting quite chilly with sun back out but a breeze.

Had some local beer on the Main Street and watched the sun set which has become a habit of our time in Gdansk.

Tom found a nice place for a casual, traditional good dinner. I had roast pork with potato dumplings. It said it came with vegetables which ended up being celery and carrots. Tom had schnitzel with sauerkraut.

To cap off our stay, we had Goldwasser at the Goldwasser Restaurant on the canal. Goldwasser was invented in Gdansk though most is now made in Germany but there is still some local production (which we had).

Last images of Gdansk before I head to France and Tom continues his adventures in Poland with visits to Cracow and Warsaw.

Gdansk is definitely a city that I would recommend visiting!

  1. Thank you again for a great history lesson relating to what you’re seeing and doing. The food sounds amazing and certainly challenges my idea that “food is fuel for the body” and can/should actually be really appreciated and enjoyed. I’ll work on that…………
